Bakehouse x Villa Albertine: Artist Talk with Johanna & Esther Mirabel
Feb 24, 2026
From: 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Twin artists Johanna and Esther Mirabel discuss their interdisciplinary practice during an artist talk at Bakehouse Art Complex. Presented in partnership with Villa Albertine, the conversation offers insight into the sisters’ research-driven approach to painting, sculpture and architecture.
Working at the intersection of spatial design and memory studies, the Mirabels create hybrid installations that explore how individual and collective memory inhabits built environments. Drawing on concepts such as the “memory palace,” psychogeography and non-linear remembrance, their work considers how places are shaped by ritual, migration and lived experience.
During their Miami residency with Villa Albertine, the artists have been researching what they describe as the city’s “invisible landscapes,” examining carnivals, parades and diasporic celebrations as living sites of memory. Events such as Calle Ocho, Coconut Grove Carnival and Haitian and Cuban cultural festivities inform their ongoing surveys, interviews and sensory documentation, which evolve into sculptural forms and visual archives.
The Bakehouse x Villa Albertine Artist Talk with Johanna and Esther Mirabel takes place Tuesday, February 24. The program provides an opportunity to engage directly with the artists and learn more about how their work interprets Miami’s layered cultural narratives.
