Banana Stem Papermaking: A Family Garden Workshop
Dec 21, 2025
From: 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM
A hands-on workshop introduces children to the art of transforming natural fibers into paper while exploring the cultural roots of plant-based materials.
Banana Stem Papermaking: A Family Garden Workshop at the Vizcaya Village Garage invites kids ages 5-12 to turn banana stems and other regional fiber plants into handmade paper. Guided by artist and instructor Gabriela Serra, participants learn simple papermaking techniques, experiment with banana stem pulp and discuss the environmental and cultural significance of traditional fiber plants in South Florida and the Caribbean. Each child will take home their paper creations for future art or storytelling projects.
The workshop is part of Vizcaya’s Family Garden Program, a series designed for children and their caregivers to engage with nature through play-based learning, creative projects and ecological storytelling. The event is intended for intergenerational participation among families with young children.
