Caribbean Film Focus: The Creole Pig
Aug 14, 2025
From: 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM
A powerful documentary screening and conversation at Pérez Art Museum Miami explores the cultural and economic impact of one of Haiti’s most overlooked historical losses.
As part of PAMM’s Caribbean Cultural Institute programming, Caribbean Film Focus | The Creole Pig: Haiti’s Great Loss takes place Thursday, August 14, commemorating the 235th anniversary of the Bois Caïman ceremony. The evening features a screening of filmmaker Dudley Alexis’ The Creole Pig, followed by a panel discussion with Alexis, contemporary artist Edouard Duval-Carrié and FIU historian Chantalle F. Verna.
The documentary examines the extinction of the Creole pig in the 1980s—a government-led effort, prompted by foreign intervention, that devastated Haiti’s rural economy and disrupted a way of life. Through interviews with farmers, scholars and policymakers, the film reveals how this decision marked a turning point in Haiti’s economic trajectory and cultural identity.
Following the program, guests are invited to continue the conversation in Little Haiti with a visit to Lakou for drinks and light bites, as well as the neighboring IPC ArtSpace and the studio of Edouard Duval-Carrié.
