Cata Musical

The music of Juan Luis Guerra becomes the focus of a guided listening session exploring his Caribbean influences, lyrical storytelling and evolution as a songwriter. Led in Spanish by musician and writer César Muñoz, Cata Musical takes place Saturday, September 19 at the Coral Gables Museum. The benefit supports ENTRELIBROS, IMAGO POR LAS ARTES’ Spanish-language children’s literature festival.

Through selected recordings, musical analysis and lesser-known anecdotes, Muñoz traces Guerra’s path from his early jazz-influenced work with 4.40 to the international success of albums such as Ojalá que llueva café and Bachata rosa. The program examines how the Dominican artist brought together merengue, bachata, son and poetic songwriting.

A Berklee College of Music graduate, Muñoz spent more than two decades producing music for film and television and currently advises and writes for the Latin Grammy Awards, Premio Lo Nuestro and Premios Juventud. His Spanish-language project La Cata Musical pairs accessible commentary with close listening.

The evening also includes a silent auction featuring donated experiences, products and services, with proceeds benefiting ENTRELIBROS.
