Celebrate ORGULLO

Date coming soon

By: Ian Maloney | Jul 10, 2019

One part LGBTQ Pride, one part Latinx Realness, Celebrate ORGULLO is bringing Everything to the ball and holding nothing back in celebration of its 9th anniversary, October 1-15, 2019.

Celebrate ORGULLO 2019 honors the contributions of the area’s Hispanic LGBTQ community in a way that is truly unique to Greater Miami. Art, fashion, and culture will come together for two full weeks of activities that will reach a fever pitch at a Fashion Gala at FIU’s Frost Art Museum on Saturday, October 12.

According to the organization’s founder, Herb Sosa, there will be A LOT going on. “We are bringing exciting artists like Miguel Rodez for a gallery exhibit at Pridelines Miami, we’re showcasing various fashion designers around town, and celebrating local talent,” he says. “One of our favorite exhibits – the Diva Dolls Exhibit – is also back this year. The exhibit showcases one-of-a-kind DivaDolls – designed and created by icons, celebrities, drag divas/divos and more! They will be on exhibit during Celebrate ORGULLO, then available for auction to benefit our annual programming and services at Unity Coalition/Coalición Unida – South Florida’s only Latinx/Hispanic/LGBTQ organization servicing the community since 2002.”

Because the Greater Miami area is unique in so many ways, it should come as no surprise that with such a beautiful mélange of cultures and people, some truly original and authentic celebrations take place in our backyard. Here are the highlights of Celebrate ORGULLO's activities…

Fashion Forum: Tuesday, October 1

Community Forum and Q&A with expert panelists discussing fashion, design, art and the effects of AIDS on our community and talents. Throughout the 20th century, clothing has been used by the LGBTQ community as a means of expressing self-identity and of signaling to one another. The AIDS epidemic all but wiped out a generation of talented artists and designers, and sent the LGBTQ community back in the closet for fear of persecution. Fashion Forum explores this topic.

Art and Fashion/Arte y Moda
Legends Fashion Gala: Saturday, October 12

It’s no secret that the LGBTQ community is the powerhouse behind many of the most prolific pieces of art and fashion. Celebrate ORGULLO will showcase local artist and designer Bo Khasamarina, musical artist Chloe Martini, designer Chaplin Tyler and artist Miguel Rodez. Everything will come together for one magical night, celebrating the best of fashion and the LGBTQ Community. The LEGENDS GALA will feature a night of Music, Fashion, Art & Libations, and will honor the community leaders who go above and beyond and lead by example.

ArtDiva Bus Tours: Saturday, October 5 and Sunday, October 6

“Art is a Drag,” and Celebrate ORGULLO sets out to prove it with the return of its incredible ArtDiva bus tours, which will bring participants around Miami to celebrate art and drag. Cocktails will definitely be involved as well! This year there are four tours, which cover the gamut from the incredible Art Deco movement to the design revival of Downtown Miami. There will also be a bus trip to FIU’s Patricia & Phillip Frost Museum of Art, which will host “Art After Stonewall, 1969-1989,” an exhibit that coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots of 1969. This groundbreaking survey will feature more than 200 works of art and related visual materials that will explore the profound impact of the LGBTQ liberation movement on visual culture.

There will also be a series of movie nights, music and poetry nights, and much more. For a full list of activities and for more information, visit CelebrateORGULLO.com.
