African rhythms, European influences and Cuban popular music trace the evolution of the island’s musical traditions during an evening concert at Sanctuary of the Arts. Presented Saturday, October 10, Cuba: Música y Memoria follows that musical journey from ancestral forms through bolero, son, guaracha and mambo.
The program begins with OKAN, highlighting African-rooted rhythms, before turning to the European and Spanish traditions that also shaped Cuban music. AfroMore then explores popular styles that emerged from those intersecting influences.
The evening concludes with a tribute to Benny Moré, whose repertoire and vocal style helped define 20th-century Cuban popular music.
