Enduring Myths: An Evening with Nadève Ménard
Oct 30, 2026
Starting: 7:00 PM
Longstanding assumptions about language, exile and women’s voices come under scrutiny in Nadève Ménard’s study of Haitian literature. The scholar presents Enduring Myths: Scholars and Stories about Haiti on Friday, October 30 at Books & Books in Coral Gables.
Drawing on a Black feminist framework, the book challenges ideas about what constitutes authentic Haitian writing and whose work receives recognition. Ménard pairs her analysis with readings of short stories spanning the 19th through 21st centuries, including works by Ignace Nau, Évelyne Trouillot and Kettly Mars.
Ménard is a professor of Haitian literature at the École Normale Supérieure of Université d’État d’Haïti, a visiting professor at FIU and a co-editor of The Haiti Reader: History, Culture, Politics. The presentation is part of the Caribbean Book Series presented by FIU’s Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center in partnership with Books & Books.
Admission is free and open to the public. An RSVP provides general entry but does not guarantee seating. Books will be available for purchase.
