Garrick Ohlsson: Visions in Counterpoint
Jun 16, 2026
Starting: 7:30 PM
Pianist Garrick Ohlsson brings a recital of Chopin, Brahms and Shostakovich to the Frost Chopin Academy & Festival. The performance takes place Tuesday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Gusman Concert Hall at the University of Miami. A centerpiece of the 2026 festival, the concert highlights Ohlsson’s long association with Chopin alongside major works of counterpoint, variation and Romantic expression.
Ohlsson became the first American to win the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1970 and has since built an international career as one of the leading interpreters of Chopin’s music. His program includes Chopin’s Ballade in A-flat major, op. 47, a work known for its narrative sweep and emotional depth, along with Shostakovich’s Prelude and Fugue in E minor, op. 87 and Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, op. 24.
The evening opens with selected Frost Chopin Academy participants performing works by Chopin. The recital is part of the Frost Chopin Academy & Festival, which brings artists, students and audiences together for a week of concerts and intensive study devoted to Chopin performance and interpretation.
