Gary Tyler, Artist & Author BOOK SIGNING
Dec 07, 2025
From: 1:30 PM to 03:00 PM
Join us for a special Sunday afternoon with artist and social activist Gary Tyler, as we celebrate the launch of his new memoir, Stitching Freedom: A True Story of Injustice, Defiance and Hope in Angola Prison.
In 1975, after being wrongfully charged with the killing of a white teenager and found guilty by an all-white jury, Gary Tyler was sent to Angola prison to die. He was only seventeen years old at the time, making him the youngest prisoner on death row in the United States. After more than four decades in prison, Gary Tyler was released in 2016—but he was never exonerated. Gary Tyler will be in conversation with Museum Director/Community Cultural Curator Terrance Cribbs-Lorrant, talking about how he did more than just "survive" while on death row, but triumphed over this injustice. Gary will share how he learned to reject bitterness and fight for freedom, and pay tribute to other incarcerated individuals who became his guardians and mentors.
The conversation will be followed by a reception. RSVP is REQUIRED. Books will be available for purchase on-site
