Isaac Julien: Vagabondia
Through Jul 26, 2026
weekly on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
From: Noon to 5:00 PM
A celebrated two-screen film installation by pioneering British artist Isaac Julien comes to The Bass. On view beginning August 20 on Miami Beach, Vagabondia (2000) immerses viewers inside London’s Sir John Soane’s Museum, where ghostly figures and a defiant “vagabond” character unsettle the institution’s colonial legacies.
Layered with Creole narration and choreographed movement, the film blends past and present, archival and imaginary, to question how museums shape memory and what they leave unseen. The installation transforms The Bass’s red-walled gallery into an atmospheric space for reflection on visibility, power and cultural memory.
Organized by Claudia Mattos, Associate Curator of New Media Art, Isaac Julien: Vagabondia is a gift of Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz.
