Jazz in the Sanctuary
Aug 08, 2026
From: 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Jazz, Haitian musical traditions and sacred-space photography come together for an afternoon program at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex. Jazz in the Sanctuary takes place Saturday, August 8, with performances by The Assel Jean-Pierre Trio scheduled for 2:30 and 3:45 p.m. Presented by the FIU Public Humanities Lab, the event is held in conjunction with Woosler Delisfort’s exhibition SANCTUARY: Our Sacred Space.
Led by pianist Assel Jean-Pierre Jr., the trio blends jazz with Haitian, gospel, classical and contemporary influences. The ensemble’s performance connects with the exhibition’s themes through improvisation, storytelling and a musical approach rooted in cultural exchange.
Delisfort, a Little Haiti-based documentary photographer, explores the spiritual lives of Miami’s Indigenous, African and Caribbean communities through images made in temples, churches, mosques and other places of gathering. Featuring more than 50 works, SANCTUARY: Our Sacred Space examines how sacred spaces continue to serve as sources of connection, identity and community life in Miami.
The event is part of The Bridge, a partnership between the FIU Public Humanities Lab, IPC ArtSpace and the Writer’s Room at The Betsy Hotel in South Beach.
