José López: Schubert, Liszt & the Romantic Piano
Oct 11, 2026
From: 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Romantic-era piano works by Schubert, Liszt, Alkan and Hiller come together in a solo recital by FIU pianist José López at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center. Presented Sunday, October 11, as part of the FIU Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts’ 2026-2027 season, the program pairs familiar figures of the 19th century with composers and works heard less often in recital.
López, professor and coordinator of FIU’s Piano Program, performs Schubert’s Sonata in A minor, D. 537, selections from Liszt’s late piano works and music by Charles-Valentin Alkan. The program also features Ferdinand Hiller’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in A-flat major, Op. 59.
Together, the selections offer contrasting perspectives on Romantic piano writing, from Schubert’s lyricism and Liszt’s later style to the distinctive approaches of Alkan and Hiller.
