Kinoplex: American movie

Independent filmmaking, creative obsession and low-budget chaos come into focus in a screening of Chris Smith’s 1999 documentary American Movie at Churchill’s Pub in Little Haiti. Taking place Sunday, August 16, the program is part of Kinoplex, a recurring film series pairing informal screenings with guest hosts and conversation.

American Movie follows Wisconsin filmmaker Mark Borchardt as he struggles to complete his horror short Coven, navigating financial setbacks, family complications and the practical realities of making a movie with limited resources. The documentary balances humor with an affectionate look at persistence and artistic ambition, with Borchardt’s longtime friend and collaborator Mike Schank becoming a memorable presence throughout the film.

Michael and Jimmy serve as guest hosts for the evening. Drinks are available from Churchill’s bar throughout the screening.
