Miccosukee Arts & Science Symposium

Indigenous knowledge, Everglades science, visual art and public discussion come together in a daylong program examining the future of the River of Grass. The second Miccosukee Arts & Science Symposium takes place Friday, October 2 at Miccosukee Casino & Resort. Held biennially, the free event is organized by the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida and Love The Everglades Movement, with Florida International University helping lead its science programming.

The symposium approaches environmental concerns through four interconnected areas: science, art, community and action. Indigenous artists, scientists, policymakers, conservationists and other community members will take part in presentations, workshops, panel discussions, field trips and cultural programs.

Highlights include:

• Artist talks with traditional and contemporary artists from the Miccosukee and Seminole tribes
• Lightning talks by FIU Everglades scientists on sharing ideas, building science and creating trust
• Workshops led by arts organizations, including the Miami Artist Census
• Discussions about alternative economies with local and international arts groups
• Small-group field trips, including a nature hike with Miccosukee conservationists and an exhibition walk-through with artist Christina Pettersson
• A screening of the documentary Edge of Hope, followed by a discussion with director Dudley Alexis and Miccosukee educator Betty Osceola
• A fashion show, dance party and additional film programming

Dedicated sessions will be presented in Spanish, with interpretation available during select additional programs. Poster sessions and community organization booths provide further opportunities for exchange throughout the day. Event fundraising will benefit the Miccosukee Education Fund, which supports school supplies, equipment and tuition costs for Miccosukee students.
