Aug 22, 2026
From: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Street photography, visual storytelling and documentary practice come into focus in a hands-on workshop with Miami-based photojournalist Matias J. Ocner at Freedom Tower Miami. Taking place Saturday, August 22, the program begins in the Knight Skylight Gallery before moving into Downtown Miami, where participants will practice observing, framing and photographing people and places. The workshop is presented by the Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College.
Ocner is a photojournalist for the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald whose work has documented immigration, protests, natural disasters, sporting events and communities across South Florida. His photography is also featured in the Freedom Tower exhibitions Journeys of Freedom and Reflections. During the workshop, he will discuss lighting, timing and the role photographs can play in shaping narratives and preserving a visual record of a city.
Participants may work with either a camera or cell phone. The session concludes back at the Freedom Tower with a group review and discussion of the images created. Admission to the Freedom Tower is included with RSVP, and event attendees may park free of charge in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue.
