MOAD Talks: A Conversation with Khadijah Cypress
Aug 15, 2026
From: Noon to 1:30 PM
Miccosukee cultural practice, textile traditions and contemporary Indigenous identity come into focus in a conversation with artist and educator Khadijah Cypress at Freedom Tower. Taking place Saturday, August 15, the program features Cypress in discussion with Isabela Villanueva, consulting curator for the Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College. The event is presented in connection with MOAD’s exhibition Abstraction as Legacy.
A member of the Miccosukee Tribe and Bird Clan, Cypress has been sewing traditional attire since her teens and now teaches culture and crafting at the reservation school while also operating a volunteer cultural center. Her work has included garments for the tribe’s fashion show, which she has also hosted, and was featured in an exhibition at Pérez Art Museum Miami from 2021 to 2022.
The conversation also connects Cypress’ practice with the legacy of artist and fashion designer Lloyd Kiva New, whose work appears in Abstraction as Legacy and who co-founded the Institute of American Indian Arts.
The program runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public, with light refreshments served. Free parking is available in the MDC garage at 500 NE Second Avenue.
