MOAD Talks with Dr. Mauricio Castro
Nov 04, 2026
From: 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
The Freedom Tower’s role in Miami’s Cuban exile history comes into focus in a talk by historian Mauricio Castro presented by the Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College. The program takes place Wednesday, November 4 at the Freedom Tower, where Castro will examine the building’s connection to the Cuban Refugee Program and the broader policies that shaped migration from Cuba during the Cold War.
Castro is the author of Only a Few Blocks to Cuba: Cold War Refugee Policy, the Cuban Diaspora, and the Transformations of Miami, published in 2024 by the University of Pennsylvania Press. His research explores how refugee policy, Cuban migration and urban change became intertwined in Miami, making the Freedom Tower a particularly resonant setting for the discussion.
Admission is free and open to the public, with light refreshments served. Event attendees may park free of charge in the Miami Dade College garage at 500 NE Second Avenue.
