Nov 06, 2025
From: 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM
The Lowe Art Museum presents Old Masters in Context: Naples, Sacred and Profane, an evening that combines art, history, and music. Assistant Curator Dr. John Witty, a specialist in fourteenth-century Italian art, will explore the reign of Queen Johanna I of Naples, whose contested rule shaped the politics and culture of one of Europe’s most powerful kingdoms. His talk will focus on two donor portraits in a Kress collection altarpiece at the museum, reinterpreting them as claimants to Johanna’s throne. The program concludes with a performance of period music by the vocal ensemble Ampersand, bringing the era’s atmosphere to life.
Dr. John Witty is Assistant Curator at the Lowe Art Museum and an expert in Italian art of the fourteenth century. His research explores intersections of politics, religion, and visual culture in late medieval Europe.
