Opening Reception: Caught in the Eye

Photographs, film, newspapers and personal letters revisit the destruction of the 1926 Miami hurricane through the voices and images of those who experienced it. The opening reception takes place Thursday, September 17 at the Museum of Miami, marking 100 years since the storm struck a rapidly growing city and reshaped its development. Guests will receive a first look at Caught in the Eye: Remembering the 1926 Hurricane, an exhibition centered on firsthand accounts of the 12-hour disaster and its aftermath.

The exhibition examines how residents documented the hurricane as Miami confronted widespread damage and the challenge of rebuilding. Archival materials place the storm within the broader story of the city’s early growth while preserving personal perspectives that reveal how the event was experienced on the ground.
