Pathétique: Frost Symphony Orchestra

Mozart’s classical-era clarity gives way to Tchaikovsky’s deeply expressive final symphony in a program by the Frost Symphony Orchestra at UM Gusman Concert Hall. Taking place Saturday, September 19, the concert is part of Frost Music Live’s 2026-2027 season and is conducted by Gerard Schwarz.

The program opens with Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 in D major, the “Haffner,” which began as a serenade before the composer reshaped it into the four-movement symphony known today. Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D major follows, featuring a soloist to be announced; adapted from an earlier oboe concerto, the work has become a central piece of the flute repertoire.

Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B minor, the “Pathétique,” closes the concert. Premiered just nine days before the composer’s death, the symphony was the last of his works introduced during his lifetime and is distinguished by its intense emotional character and unconventional, somber conclusion.
