Schubert, Clyne & Schumann
Dec 21, 2025
Starting: 2:00 PM
A chamber program combining romantic lyricism, mid-century experimentation and contemporary resonance will be performed by Fellows of the New World Symphony this December at the New World Center.
Schubert, Clyne & Schumann will be presented on Sunday, December 2., as part of the New World Symphony’s 2025–2026 season. Clarinetist Jon Manasse joins NWS Fellows for a concert that moves across centuries and styles, beginning with Robert Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen for clarinet, viola and piano, a set of four short pieces inspired by the idea of fairy tales. George Antheil’s Symphony for Five Instruments follows, offering an example of his compact, rhythmically driven chamber works. Manasse returns as soloist in Anna Clyne’s Strange Loops for clarinet and strings, a piece that explores memory and musical self-reference. The program concludes with Franz Schubert’s beloved Trout Quintet, a work of melodic richness and vibrant interplay written for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass.
Internationally recognized for his expressive sound and artistry, Jon Manasse appears regularly as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral performer. He has premiered works by leading composers and recorded a wide-ranging discography including clarinet concertos by Mozart, Copland and Liebermann. He currently serves on the faculties of The Juilliard School, Lynn Conservatory and Mannes School of Music.
The Fellows of the New World Symphony are early-career musicians selected through a rigorous audition process for a three-year fellowship. Under the mentorship of leading guest artists and conductors, they perform a broad repertoire while engaging with new approaches to classical music presentation and education.
