South Florida Ethnobotanical Community Garden Planting

South Florida native plants with culinary, medicinal and cultural significance become the focus of a hands-on community planting at The Underline’s Vizcaya Station Plaza. Presented by Friends of The Underline on Saturday, October 10, the program invites participants to help establish an ethnobotanical garden designed to highlight relationships between plants, people and place.

Led by Friends of The Underline horticulturist Asha Bertsch, the planting will feature native species used across Indigenous and diaspora communities in South Florida and the Caribbean. Cultural leaders will also share perspectives on how particular plants have been incorporated into foodways, traditional practices and community knowledge.

The garden is intended to remain as a community resource for future guided and self-guided learning, while also demonstrating the role native planting and green infrastructure can play in climate resilience. The event is wheelchair accessible and may be postponed in the event of rain.
