From: 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Large-scale illuminated fruit sculptures take shape through free community workshops at Vizcaya Village this summer. Studio Vizcaya: The Fruit We Bear takes place on select dates from June 6 through July 12, inviting participants of all ages to help create papier-mâché sculptures that will later be displayed during a ticketed evening program at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens. Led by South Florida artist and educator Shawna Moulton, the workshop series centers on collective art-making, reflection and shared values.
Participants will help build oversized sculptures of fruits such as oranges, mangoes, avocados, papaya, lychee and carambola, each connected to themes including love, joy, patience, hope, kindness and self-love. The process includes layering paper over sculptural forms and adding written reflections, drawings, affirmations and personal stories into the work, making each participant’s contribution part of the finished installation.
Moulton is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes sculpture, handmade paper, watercolor and illustration, with work shaped by Caribbean heritage, motherhood and the African Diaspora. She has taught in museum education settings across South Florida and beyond and is a member of the Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator.
Workshops take place June 6, June 7, June 14, June 21, June 28, July 5 and July 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Vizcaya Village Garage, located across South Miami Avenue from Vizcaya’s main entrance. Admission is free, but registration is required. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The completed sculptures will be featured at Vizcaya Late: The Fruit We Bear on Saturday, July 25.
