Symbiotic House: Germane Barnes
Mar 26, 2026
Starting: 6:30 PM
Hear from a Miami-based architect whose work examines how design shapes identity and social structures during an evening lecture at The Kampong in Coconut Grove. Part of an ongoing series focused on architecture and ecological thinking, the program spotlights the research-driven practice of Germane Barnes.
Symbiotic House: Germane Barnes takes place Thursday, March 26. Barnes, a Chicago-born licensed architect and founding principal of Studio Barnes, explores architecture’s social and political dimensions through historical analysis and speculative design. He serves as Associate Professor and Director of the Master of Architecture Graduate Programs at the University of Miami School of Architecture.
His work has been featured in exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Architecture Biennial and The Museum of Modern Art’s Reconstructions: Architecture and Blackness in America. A recipient of the Architectural League Prize and a Rome Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, Barnes’ work is also held in the permanent collections of SFMOMA, LACMA and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Organized by Miami-based artist Lee Pivnik, the Symbiotic House lecture series brings together artists and designers working at the intersection of architecture and ecological mutualism.
