Symbiotic House: Germane Barnes
Mar 26, 2026
Starting: 6:30 PM
An architect whose work explores the relationship between design, identity and social agency speaks at The Kampong in Coconut Grove as part of an ongoing lecture series. Symbiotic House: Germane Barnes takes place Thursday, March 26.
This installment of the Symbiotic House lecture series features Germane Barnes, a Chicago-born, Miami-based licensed architect and founding principal of Studio Barnes. His research-driven practice examines architecture’s social and political dimensions through historical analysis and speculative design. Barnes is an Associate Professor and Director of the Master of Architecture Graduate Programs at the University of Miami School of Architecture.
His work has been exhibited at institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago and The Museum of Modern Art as part of Reconstructions: Architecture and Blackness in America, as well as the Chicago Architecture Biennial. He is a recipient of the Architectural League Prize and a Rome Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Rome. His work is held in the permanent collections of institutions such as SFMOMA, LACMA and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Organized by Miami-based artist Lee Pivnik, the Symbiotic House lecture series convenes artists and designers working at the intersection of architecture and ecological mutualism.
