The Debut (Opening Night)

A community-theater comedy starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti opens the 2026 Miami Film Festival GEMS showcase at the Koubek Center. Presented Thursday, October 29, Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut receives its Florida premiere as the opening-night selection for GEMS, the festival’s annual fall program running through November 5.

Moore stars as Mona Friedman, a reserved housewife whose small role in a local theater production sends her deep into method acting and into conflict with the show’s domineering director, played by Giamatti. Written and directed by Eisenberg, the film uses the backstage world of community theater to explore artistic ambition, ego and the conviction that even the smallest role deserves serious attention.

Opening-night festivities begin with a pre-screening gathering on the Koubek Center lawn, with food and drinks provided. Parking is available onsite and at Miami Dade College’s nearby Padrón Campus.
