Uhuru: A Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom and Liberation
Jun 19, 2025
From: 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Explore the legacy of emancipation and the ongoing journey toward collective liberation through an afternoon of film, discussion, art and cultural celebration. This Juneteenth event brings together community members of all ages to reflect on freedom’s evolving meaning and engage with the stories that shape Black history in Florida and beyond.
Uhuru 2025: A Juneteenth Celebration of Freedom and Liberation takes place on Thursday, June 19 at Barry University (Andreas Rooms 111 & 112), presented by South Florida People of Color in collaboration with Barry University. The program includes a screening of Before Juneteenth: Florida's Emancipation, followed by a keynote from historian Dr. Tameka Hobbs examining the connections between Florida’s May 20 Emancipation Day, Juneteenth and the Haitian fight for independence.
Interactive elements include healing circles, a children’s arts program focused on the theme of freedom and a gallery walk featuring local visual artists. Live performances of dance, poetry and music round out the experience, alongside food, refreshments and a book giveaway celebrating Black culture and history.
The event is free and open to the public with registration required. Entrance and parking are accessible via North Miami Avenue.
