A world premiere theatrical work by Cuban playwright and director Carlos Celdrán explores memory, exile and the weight of a single life-altering decision. Presented by ARCA Images, Variaciones para un tema insignificante (Variations on an Insignificant Theme) runs April 24-26 and May 1-3 at the Westchester Cultural Arts Center.
Set to the recurring presence of Bach’s cello suites, the play follows a woman revisiting a pivotal moment from decades earlier, when she chose not to leave with her husband, a writer. What appears to be a minor decision unfolds into a layered reflection shaped by personal and political realities, including exile, fear, motherhood and unresolved memory. The narrative moves between past and present, structured through shifting perspectives and repeated variations that examine how a single moment can reverberate across a lifetime.
Directed by Celdrán, whose work is recognized for its focus on performance and language, the production emphasizes dialogue, physical presence and silence, with music serving as an active element within the storytelling. The play features performances by Laura Ramos and Daniel Romero and is produced by Alexa Kuve.
The presentation is part of the Miami-Dade County Auditorium’s Away From Home Series, an off-site program that continues to stage theater, dance and music performances at partner venues during the auditorium’s renovation.
