Windows @ Walgreens: Walking Tour + Opening Reception

Two storefront-window exhibitions turn a stretch of Collins Avenue into an outdoor art walk exploring memory, migration, design and everyday objects. Presented by Oolite Arts on Wednesday, October 7, Windows @ Walgreens: Walking Tour + Opening Reception begins at the Walgreens windows at 74th Street in Miami Beach, where participants join artists Beatriz Monteavaro and Jillian Mayer for a guided walk south to the second installation at 67th Street. A reception follows at Norman’s Tavern.

At 74th Street, Monteavaro’s Marseille Drive draws on fragmented childhood memories of her family’s early years in North Beach after leaving Cuba. Using family photographs as reference, the Miami-based artist works across painting and sculpture to consider migration, refuge, family life and the creation of a new home.

At 67th Street, Mayer presents Mayer Objects, a collection of limited-edition works in ceramics, glass and metal that extends her sculptural practice into functional objects for everyday spaces. Known for work spanning sculpture, film, performance and digital media, Mayer explores the relationship between material objects, technology and contemporary life.

Oolite Arts has presented work in the Walgreens storefront windows along Collins Avenue for more than 25 years, using the public-facing spaces to introduce contemporary art into the streetscape of Miami Beach.
