Zambian psychedelic rock pioneers WITCH bring the sound of Zamrock to ZeyZey Miami. The performance takes place Tuesday, September 15, featuring a band whose music helped define a 1970s fusion of rock, rhythm and blues, funk, soul and traditional African influences.
An acronym for We Intend to Cause Havoc, WITCH emerged in Zambia after the country’s 1964 independence and became one of the most influential groups in the Zamrock movement. Led by vocalist Emanyeo “Jagari” Chanda, the band drew inspiration from artists such as Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, The Rolling Stones and Deep Purple while developing a heavier, distinctly Zambian psychedelic sound.
Their 1972 debut album Introduction is regarded as the first commercially released album by a Zambian band, followed by releases including Lazy Bones!!, Lukombo Vibes, Movin’ On and Kuomboka. After decades of dormancy, WITCH was rediscovered through reissues and renewed international interest, leading to a return to touring and new recordings. The band released Zango in 2023, its first album of new material in nearly 40 years, with collaborators including Sampa the Great, followed by Sogolo in 2025.
ZeyZey Miami is an open-air cultural venue in Little Haiti known for live music, DJ events, craft cocktails, natural wines and food from Tacos María, including grass-fed, seed-oil-free tacos.
