Hands-on marine science activities, planetarium programming and community partner stations explore how protected ocean spaces support marine life and coastal ecosystems. World Ocean Day 2026 Presented by Miami DDA takes place Saturday, June 6 at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, with programming aligned with the global theme “Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet.” The celebration highlights research, conservation and innovation through interactive activities, science demonstrations, screenings and educational experiences throughout the museum.
Guests can take part in ocean-focused activities with Frost Science Conservation, Miami Waterkeeper, Rescue a Reef, Broward County Natural Resources, Ocaquatics Swim School, MORAES, Sustainable Spin and the University of Miami Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies with NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory. Activity highlights include:
- Water quality testing and community science activities
- Marine biology trivia and ocean safety information
- Native and invasive species identification
- Coral reef restoration activities with Lego coral builds
- Ocean chemistry experiments with pH and saltwater density
- Face painting and a community mapping project centered on personal connections to the ocean
The day also includes a new Frost Planetarium show, UniVERSE, created by Frost Science and O, Miami with Topos Graphics, featuring poetry by Miami-Dade County residents and K-12 students. Showtimes are 10:30 a.m., noon and 2:15 p.m., with preregistration required. Additional highlights include a Science Story Time reading of Ocean Superheroes by Gabrielle Raymond McGee at 12:30 p.m. in meLab.
In recognition of America250, the nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the event also features programming on American innovation in ocean science. Visitors can participate in an America250 Passport Program with a poster exhibit on American oceanographers, scientists and engineers, then turn in a completed passport at the Science Store for a prize. Programming is free with paid museum admission.
