Yanuni
Mar 19, 2026
Starting: 7:00 PM
A documentary screening explores the high-stakes personal and political fight to protect the Amazon rainforest through the lived experiences of those on its front lines.
Presented by the Miami Film Festival, Yanuni screens Thursday, March 19 at Silverspot Cinema, Room 12, as part of Miami Climate Week programming. Directed by Richard Ladkani, the documentary follows Juma Xipaia, an Indigenous leader from Brazil’s Xipaya territory, and her husband Hugo Loss, a senior official with Brazil’s environmental protection agency, as they confront illegal mining, land exploitation and escalating threats to Indigenous land and lives. The film traces Juma’s rise from her remote village to national political arenas, while documenting Hugo’s dangerous enforcement operations deep in the Amazon.
Yanuni was selected as the Closing Night film at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival and is executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. The documentary has screened internationally but has not yet received U.S. distribution, making this screening a rare opportunity to see the film theatrically. The film is presented in English and classified as a Special Presentation within the festival program.
