By Eli Raphael - November 07, 2024

Coral Gables marries historical charm with vibrant culture. Known for its Mediterranean Revival architecture, tree-lined boulevards and an array of cultural offerings, it stands out as a hub for art, history and community events. Whether you're a history buff, an art lover or simply exploring the area, this beautiful neighborhood has a lot to offer.

    Must-Visit Museums in Coral Gables

    Coral Gables Merrick House

The Coral Gables Merrick House is more than a museum; it’s a journey back in time. Originally the home of city founder George E. Merrick, this beautifully preserved residence showcases early 20th-century life in South Florida. The house is filled with period furnishings, family heirlooms and personal artifacts that tell the story of how Coral Gables evolved from a vision into reality. Tours of the house offer a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of the most influential figures in the development of the area.

Situated in a historic 1939 building that once served as the city’s first police and fire station, the Coral Gables Museum offers a rich exploration of Coral Gables’ history, architecture and cultural development. The museum’s exhibits highlight the city’s unique past, focusing on urban planning, environmental preservation and community engagement. Visitors can also participate in educational programs and events that celebrate the City of Coral Gables’ heritage, making it an essential stop for anyone looking to understand the city’s roots.

Located on the University of Miami campus, the Lowe Art Museum is a treasure trove of fine art spanning 5,000 years. With rotating exhibitions and educational programs, it’s a key cultural institution that should not be missed.

Discover Coral Gables’ Art Beyond the Museums

    Public Art

Public art is well integrated into the cultural identity of Coral Gables. The city is dotted with sculptures, murals and installations that reflect its artistic spirit. The City of Coral Gables Art in Public Places program commissions and displays art in various public spaces, adding to the city’s aesthetic appeal. One such piece is Alice Aycock’s "Passion/Passiflora Incarnation", located near the Coral Gables Museum. This dynamic sculpture, inspired by the intricate shapes of passion flowers, combines nature with abstract metal forms, creating a sense of movement and energy that interacts with its surroundings. Another standout is "A Midsummer Night’s Dream", situated below a large banyan tree in Balboa Plaza. The sculpture, conceived of as a long sofa, serves as a communal art piece meant to bring together people in conversation and friendship.

    Art Galleries

Home to a variety of art galleries, Coral Gables offers visitors a chance to experience diverse artistic expression throughout the city. Cernuda Arte specializes in Cuban art, showcasing a collection of contemporary and historic works from prominent Cuban artists, including surrealist Manuel Mendive, Belkis Ayón and René Portocarrero.  The Americas Collection art gallery showcases a variety of contemporary art from both emerging talents and established artists that honors the rich cultural heritage of the Americas. The gallery provides personalized art advisory services, helping clients find artworks that complement their space and aesthetic preferences. They also engage the community by hosting events and exhibitions, making it a cultural hub for art lovers in the area.

The Biltmore’s architecture is a stunning example of Mediterranean Revival style, and its history is as rich as its luxurious interiors. Venetian Pool

Just a short distance from the Biltmore is another Coral Gables icon: the Venetian Pool. Created in the 1920s from a coral rock quarry, this historic swimming pool is unlike any other.

Open seasonally, it features cascading waterfalls, grottos, and lush landscaping that transport visitors to a tropical paradise. It’s also the largest freshwater pool in the United States, drawing its 820,000 gallons of water from an underground aquifer, making it a refreshing place to cool down.

    Douglas Entrance

Douglas Entrance, also known as La Puerta del Sol, is one of the few remaining original gateways to Coral Gables. Built in 1927, this Mediterranean-style archway once served as the official entrance to the city. Today, it stands as a historical landmark and a reminder of the city’s grand vision.

    Historic Villages

Coral Gables is home to seven historic villages, each with its own unique architectural style. These villages were part of George Merrick’s grand plan to create a city of diverse cultural influences. Notable examples include the French Normandy Village, the Chinese Village and the Italian Village.

Each of these enclaves offers a glimpse into the city’s architectural diversity and historical richness.
