A Room of One’s Own

Starting: 8:00 PM
Virginia Woolf’s landmark lecture on women, writing and creative independence is brought to the stage in an intimate theatrical performance at Miami Beach Community Church. A Room of One’s Own takes place Saturday, August 29, as part of The Opera Atelier’s No Room of Her Own series, which highlights the contributions of trailblazing women artists.
Interdisciplinary artist, art critic and performer Celeste Landeros, Ph.D., reenacts Woolf’s 1929 lecture, a foundational feminist text arguing that women writers have historically been limited not by talent, but by lack of money, privacy and space to create. The performance offers audiences a close look at Woolf’s reasoning, literary style and continuing relevance.
Landeros is a professor of English and Humanities at Barry University and chair of the Florida Folklife Council. Her scholarly work includes co-editing the dance studies anthology Everynight Life: Culture and Dance in Latin/o America.
