Explore a century of artistic innovation at Cernuda Arte with A Surrealist Century: 100 Years of Surrealism, an exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of the Surrealist Movement. Opening on Friday, September 6, this comprehensive showcase features over 100 artworks by more than 20 Cuban artists, offering a deep dive into the movement’s profound impact on Caribbean and Latin American art.
The exhibition traces the journey of Surrealism from its origins in Europe, sparked by André Breton’s 1924 “Surrealist Manifesto,” to its unique evolution in Latin America, where it merged with the region’s rich cultural traditions to inspire Magic Realism. Highlighted are the works of Afro-Cuban artists like Wifredo Lam, whose visionary contributions helped redefine the movement, as well as contemporary figures such as Tomás Sánchez and Roberto Fabelo, who continue to explore its themes today.
A Surrealist Century provides a rare opportunity to witness the diverse expressions of Surrealism as reimagined by Cuban artists. The exhibition runs through January 31, 2025.
