An Evening with Edwidge Danticat
Aug 29, 2026
Starting: 5:00 PM
Haitian American author Edwidge Danticat discusses grief, family and belonging in her new novel Dèy at Books & Books in Coral Gables. The conversation takes place Saturday, August 29, in partnership with Americans for Immigrant Justice. Miami Herald journalist Jacqueline Charles moderates the evening, bringing her deep experience covering Haiti and the Caribbean to the discussion.
Taking its title from the Haitian Creole word for mourning, Dèy follows Magnolia, a Haitian American real estate agent in Miami whose life is shaken after surviving a mall shooting. As she keeps the trauma hidden from those closest to her, Magnolia is forced to reconsider her relationships with her daughter, partner, parents and the places that have shaped her sense of home.
Danticat is the author of acclaimed works including Breath, Eyes, Memory, Krik? Krak!, Brother, I’m Dying and The Farming of Bones. Her honors include a MacArthur Fellowship, the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, a National Book Critics Circle Award and multiple National Book Award finalist selections. Charles is a Pulitzer Prize finalist, Emmy Award winner and longtime Miami Herald reporter known for her coverage of Haiti and the Caribbean.
Admission options include a ticket package for two guests with one copy of Dèy included.
