Jun 05, 2025
Starting: 7:00 PM
Modern curanderismo and traditional Latine herbalism come to life through an interactive evening of cultural exploration and hands-on learning. An Evening with Iosellev "Josie" Castaneda takes place Thursday, June 5 at Books & Books in Coral Gables, featuring the author's new release Latine Herbalism: A Beginner's Guide to Modern Curanderismo, Healing Plants, and Folk Traditions of the Americas.
The event, titled Rituales y Remedios, offers attendees an immersive experience into the world of Latine folk traditions. Participants will have the opportunity to create custom flower "remedios" inspired by practices detailed in Castaneda's book while learning about the medicinal properties of various herbs and plants central to this cultural healing tradition.
Iosellev "Josie" Castaneda Morales brings authentic expertise as a practicing modern-day Curandera who was introduced to these healing arts from an early age. Now serving the Miami community as a Yerbera (one who works with herbs), Castaneda shares generations of knowledge about herbal remedies, natural recipes, plant medicine and holistic rituals practiced by curanderos and curanderas throughout the Americas.
Her book explores the rich heritage behind these practices, drawing from sacred locations across the United States, Mexico and South America to present a comprehensive guide for those interested in incorporating these traditions into contemporary life.
This free event includes a discussion with the author and a book signing. While tickets are complimentary, copies of Latine Herbalism ($18.95, published by Ulysses Press) will be available for purchase at the venue.
