Apr 10, 2026
Starting: 8:00 PM
A documentary examining arts education and community impact in Miami screens at the Olympia Theater as part of the 43rd Miami Film Festival. An Instrumental Start – A Model for the Nation will be shown Friday, April 10.
Directed by Brian Bayerl and Mike Huter, the film traces more than five decades of work by educator Marshall L. Davis Sr., whose after-school program at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center evolved into a nationally recognized model for arts instruction. Set within a historically underserved neighborhood, the documentary follows the development of a program that has shaped generations of young artists through music, performance and cultural education.
Presented as a world premiere, the film combines archival context with contemporary footage to highlight the center’s long-standing influence and the individuals whose lives have been shaped by its approach to arts education.
