Bill Baggs Stargazing
Jan 14, 2026
From: 7:45 PM to 9:00 PM
A nighttime program unfolds at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park as the Southern Cross Astronomical Society leads an evening of stargazing and introductory astrophotography. Set along the seawall near Pavilion D-18, the gathering offers a rare chance to explore the night sky with experienced astronomers and specialized equipment.
Guest astronomers Carlos Garcia and Russell Harcha guide the session, sharing insights from years of practice. Garcia brings both visual telescopes and smart scopes capable of capturing galaxies, nebulae and star clusters, while Harcha, a longtime SCAS member and retired physics teacher, observes with a Dobsonian reflector he built in 1990. Attendees can view sample astrophotography work and learn about the tools and techniques behind each image.
Guests are encouraged to bring a folding chair, a reusable cup and a sense of curiosity. Light refreshments will be served throughout the program.
Free for members; $10 for nonmembers. Park entry fee applies. Guests may RSVP via email.
