Black Miami History Tour by Dr. Marvin Dunn

Historian Marvin Dunn leads a daylong journey through the neighborhoods, landmarks and events that have shaped Black life in Miami. The Black Miami History Tour takes place Sunday, September 13, traveling from Coconut Grove and Downtown Miami through Liberty City, Little Haiti and Overtown. Stops and discussions examine Bahamian settlement, segregation, civil rights, racial violence and the people and institutions that contributed to the city’s development.

Dunn, a Florida International University professor emeritus and author of Black Miami in the Twentieth Century, has spent decades researching and documenting Black history in South Florida. The itinerary includes sites such as Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, the Coconut Grove segregation wall, Fort Dallas, Liberty Square and the Arthur McDuffie historic marker before concluding with a walking tour of Overtown landmarks including the Dana Dorsey House, Ward Rooming House, Historic Lyric Theater and Bethel AME Church.

A complimentary lunch at the Miami Center for Racial Justice’s Teach the Truth Garden is included. Proceeds support the organization’s work preserving and documenting Black history, including its broader Teach the Truth educational initiatives.
