Starting: 3:15 PM
A documentary portrait of everyday life in Old Havana unfolds through the voices of residents performing their own lived experiences on screen. Screening Sunday, April 12 at the Koubek Center as part of the Miami Film Festival, Calle Cuba offers a layered look at a historic street where personal stories reflect broader social realities. The film is presented in Spanish and marks its world premiere.
Directed by Vanessa Batista Fernández, the documentary blends observational storytelling with staged reenactments, allowing longtime residents to express their frustrations, aspirations and uncertainties with striking immediacy. Themes of migration, economic hardship and resilience emerge as individuals weigh the possibility of leaving Cuba against the complexities and risks involved.
The screening is expected to include appearances by members of the filmmaking team, including the director, producer Claudia Olivera Peña, editor Joanna Montero Fernández and composer Marcelo Diaz Camacho. Part of the festival’s Spotlight on Cuba and Directed by Women programs, the film contributes to a broader exploration of contemporary Cuban perspectives through cinema.
