Contemporary Currents: Retorno by Miguel Salom
Through Oct 31, 2025
From: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
A meditative study in memory, material, and place, Retorno presents a series of wet plate collodion photographs created by 2018 Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence Miquel Salom, alongside ephemera that illuminate his technical process and career trajectory.
On view August 1 through October 31 as part of the Deering Estate’s Contemporary Currents 2025 exhibition series, Retorno revisits Salom’s earlier project ICTUM OLIM VI … tempus fugit … through selections made on-site at the Estate. Installed in the Garden Room of the historic Richmond Cottage, the exhibition highlights Salom’s mastery of 19th-century photographic techniques and his poetic approach to capturing landscapes, architecture, and atmosphere.
Born in Mallorca in 1951, Salom is a self-taught visual storyteller whose work has been exhibited internationally. He is known for reviving the handcrafted ambrotype and tintype processes through a meticulous 23-step method. Contemporary Currents is an annual Deering Estate program that features solo presentations by past and current Artists-in-Residence, integrating contemporary perspectives with the site’s historic spaces and collections.
An artist reception and documentary screening will take place Sunday, September 7 from 3 to 5 p.m. All ages welcome.
