Dual Citizen
This event has passed.
A personal documentary about Haitian identity, citizenship and family history screens at Coral Gables Art Cinema in celebration of Haitian Heritage Month. Taking place Saturday, May 2, the program includes a reception and in-person Q&A with filmmaker Rachelle Salnave.
Dual Citizen follows Salnave and her father, Edouard, as they navigate the process of reclaiming Haitian nationality through a 2012 constitutional amendment. The journey requires Edouard, who left Haiti after his family’s political exile in the 1960s, to reconnect with a country he has not visited in more than 50 years before his daughter can pursue citizenship herself.
Blending humor, family portraiture and political history, the film examines what it means to hold more than one national identity across generations. The screening is presented in partnership with FIU’s Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center and Ayiti Images.
