Enduring Spark: 100 Years of Black History
Through Feb 28, 2026
By appointment only.
A group exhibition at Gato Gordo Gallery examines a century of Black history through contemporary artistic perspectives.
Enduring Spark: 100 Years of Black History brings together the work of thirteen artists to reflect on creativity, resilience and cultural expression as living forces within Black communities. The exhibition takes its title from the initiative launched in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson, whose efforts to formally recognize Black history laid the groundwork for ongoing visibility, education and collective memory.
The featured works approach Black history as a multifaceted and evolving experience, exploring themes that range from music as cultural memory and the expressive power of the human face to ancestral symbolism, environmental relationships, lived experiences of discrimination, and endurance in the face of adversity. Rather than presenting a single narrative, the exhibition emphasizes plurality, highlighting how Black history continues to be shaped through sound, image, and shared experience.
Curated by Oscar Esteban Martinez, Enduring Spark is on view from January 23 through February 28, by appointment, at Gato Gordo Gallery.
