Film Screening: Mountains

Miami’s Little Haiti provides the setting for a film about family, cultural inheritance and the pressures of neighborhood change at Florida International University. Presented by the FIU Public Humanities Lab on Thursday, September 10, the program features a screening of Monica Sorelle’s Mountains, followed by a Q&A with Sorelle and producer Robert Colom-Vargas.

The film follows a Haitian immigrant family navigating generational tensions as gentrification reshapes the community around them, placing questions of home, aspiration and displacement within a distinctly Miami context. Sorelle, a Haitian-American filmmaker and artist based in Miami, focuses much of her work on cultural preservation, migration and diasporic experience, while Colom-Vargas, an FIU alumnus, explores belonging across the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.

A light dinner precedes the screening, with the filmmaker conversation afterward. The event takes place in Room 102 of SIPA II and is presented in partnership with several FIU programs and community organizations, including the Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance and the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center.
