Film Screening: Purvis of Overtown
Apr 22, 2026
From: 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM
A documentary screening at the Copperbridge Foundation examines the life and legacy of artist Purvis Young and his connection to Miami’s Overtown neighborhood. Taking place Friday, May 8, the program features Purvis of Overtown, a film by David Samigil and Shawn Goral that explores Young’s work as a reflection of place, memory and lived experience. The event is part of the foundation’s spring series focused on art, cinema and community.
Known for transforming found materials into expressive visual narratives, Purvis Young created a body of work rooted in the social and cultural fabric of Overtown. His practice, often associated with outsider art, addressed themes of resilience, identity and everyday life, leaving a lasting impact on South Florida’s artistic landscape.
The evening includes participation from the Purvis Young Foundation, offering additional context on the artist’s legacy and ongoing preservation efforts. Presented in dialogue with the exhibition No Seasoning, the screening provides an opportunity for collective viewing and discussion in a community-oriented setting.
