Hampton Art Lovers: Take My Hand, Precious Lord
Through Nov 02, 2025
weekly on Sunday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
Starting: Noon
Vivid portraits of joy, resilience and spiritual reflection take center stage in this dual-artist exhibition exploring themes of healing, heritage and collective strength.
Hampton Art Lovers: Take My Hand, Precious Lord is on view Thursday through Sunday through November 2 at the Historic Ward Rooming House. Inspired by the iconic African American hymn, this exhibition features the work of Solomon Adufah and Tasanee Durrett—two artists whose visual storytelling draws from personal and communal experiences across the African diaspora.
Adufah’s “Sunday Funday” series captures the energy of life in Accra and Chicago, portraying children at play, families in Sunday best, and moments of community connection filled with color and warmth. Durrett’s work explores the emotional and spiritual terrain of the Black experience, highlighting the guiding presence of African American women and their role as healers, teachers and nurturers. Her mixed-media painting A Beautiful Mess is Different Than A Mess that Is Beautiful uses salt and floral symbolism to reflect themes of purification, endurance and self-love.
Presented as part of Hampton Art Lovers’ 2025 theme, Ubuntu: I Am Because We Are, the exhibition honors the shared humanity and cultural continuity that binds generations.
