Shakespeare’s Richard III becomes a lens for artistic ego, ambition and contemporary power in this Spanish-language production from Chile. Historia de un jabalí (O algo de Ricardo III) runs September 11-13 at the Adrienne Arsht Center as part of the 40th International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami. Written by Gabriel Calderón and directed by Cristian Plana, the work arrives in Miami following its presentation at the International Teatro a Mil Festival.
The play follows two actors who are both preparing to portray Richard III after years of supporting roles. As rehearsals progress, their frustrations with the director, the cast and each other begin to mirror the ruthlessness and hunger for power associated with Shakespeare’s monarch.
Rather than adapting Richard III directly, the production uses the character as a point of departure to examine performance, resentment and the desire for control. The show is presented by Teatro Avante and the Adrienne Arsht Center and will be performed in Spanish.
