History Talks: Miami’s Boom Era Communities – Opa-locka takes place Wednesday, September 17, as part of the museum’s ongoing lecture series hosted by Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George.
This installment focuses on the development of Opa-locka, a city conceived by aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss and cattleman James H. Bright and inspired by The Arabian Nights. Known for its Moorish Revival architecture, Opa-locka stands out as one of the most unique boom era communities in South Florida. Dr. George will be joined by Alex Van Mecl, founder of the Opa-locka Preservation Association, who will share insights into his preservation work, including the Opa-locka Heritage Trail and the new Opa-locka History Museum.
