From: 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM
A foundational voice of Latin soul brings his genre-defining sound to ZeyZey Miami for a rare live performance rooted in boogaloo, rhythm-and-blues and early salsa innovation.
Joe Bataan, widely known as the “King of Latin Soul,” emerged from Spanish Harlem in the 1960s with a style that bridged Afro-Caribbean rhythms and African American soul. His work with Fania Records helped define the Latin boogaloo movement, blending doo-wop vocals, streetwise lyricism and dance-floor urgency into songs that resonated across New York’s Black and Latino communities. Tracks such as “Gypsy Woman,” “Ordinary Guy” and the gold-selling Riot! remain touchstones of the era, while later releases like “Rap-O Clap-O” positioned Bataan as an unexpected precursor to early hip-hop.
Over the decades, his influence has extended well beyond his original moment, earning him a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Filipino American National Historical Society and renewed international attention through collaborations and touring across Europe and the U.S. His live performances continue to reflect a deep musical lineage shaped by soul, Latin dance music and community storytelling.
The show takes place at ZeyZey Miami, an open-air cultural venue known for global music programming and a relaxed, high-energy atmosphere.
