A contemporary play reframing The Crucible through the perspective of teenage girls closes Zoetic Stage’s Theater Up Close season at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Running on select dates from April 29 through May 16, John Proctor Is the Villain is presented by Zoetic Stage and the Arsht Center.
Written by Kimberly Belflower, the play follows students in rural Georgia as they question how Arthur Miller’s classic drama is taught in the classroom while confronting scandals in their own community. Set against the backdrop of the #MeToo era, the story examines power, gender, authority and the ways young women interpret inherited narratives.
Known for its blend of humor, sharp dialogue and serious social themes, the Broadway play addresses topics including patriarchy, female agency, teacher-student relationships, peer pressure and religious influence. Select performances will include post-show talkbacks exploring themes raised in the production.
